Communications
Communication Overview
Gauging Systems Inc. (GSI) has experience with almost all forms of
communication used with tank gauging or telemetry systems. The main concern
in selecting a communications media is the integrity of data being
transmitted. Other concerns include: Equipment availability (open
standards), Infrastructure cost, Rated areas, Power requirements, Physical
right of ways / Line of sight, RF interference, etc.
Since 1997, GSI has standardized upon Fiber Ethernet Bus topology used in
most tank farm and telemetry applications, providing electrical isolation,
redundant & self-healing communication busses, open standard availability of
equipment, increased data throughput speed, multiple user access to field
data at the same time without degradation, etc.
GSI also has extensive experience in radio communications, both spread
spectrum (frequency hopping) and radio networks or short hops using Blue
Tooth, Zigbee, and WIFI. A combination of communication methods (based upon
system requirements and facility layout) within a single tank gauging or
telemetry system is now very common.
